If you've been running lead-acid or AGM batteries on your boat, you already know the frustration β slow charging, limited usable capacity, and that sinking feeling when your power cuts out halfway through a weekend trip. Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries have changed everything for NZ boaties, offering more usable power, faster charging, and a lifespan that outlasts AGM by three to five times.

- Usable capacity: AGM should only be discharged to 50% to protect lifespan. LiFePO4 can safely go to 80β90%, so a 100Ah lithium gives you roughly the same usable power as a 150β180Ah AGM.
- Weight: Lithium is typically 50β60% lighter β meaningful when you're thinking about trim, performance, and load on older hulls.
- Charge speed: Lithium accepts charge much faster, so your alternator or solar panels top up the bank more quickly between trips.
- Cycle life: Quality LiFePO4 cells last 2,000β3,000 cycles vs 300β500 for AGM. The higher upfront cost pays itself back quickly.
- Flat discharge curve: Voltage stays stable until the battery is nearly empty, so your chart plotter, VHF, and instruments run at full performance for longer.
How to Size Your Marine Battery Bank
The most common mistake is undersizing. Work out your daily amp-hour draw first:
- Chart plotter / VHF radio: ~5β10Ah/day
- LED cabin and navigation lighting: ~2β5Ah/day
- Bilge pump (float-operated): ~3β5Ah/day
- Portable fridge or freezer: ~30β60Ah/day depending on size and temperature
- Autopilot: ~20β40Ah/day while actively in use
Add those up, then aim for a battery bank of 2β3Γ your daily consumption to give yourself comfortable headroom. For most coastal cruisers, 100β200Ah of lithium is the sweet spot. For liveaboards or longer passages, 300Ah+ makes sense.
Why You Need a Battery Monitor
This is where many boaties cut corners β and regret it. Lithium batteries have a very flat voltage curve, which means you can't gauge state of charge reliably by voltage alone the way you could with AGM. Without a proper monitor, you'll either over-discharge and trip the BMS at the worst possible moment, or you'll constantly second-guess whether you have enough power to get through the night at anchor.
A good battery monitor uses a precision shunt to measure every amp going in and out of your battery, giving you an accurate state-of-charge percentage, time remaining, and historical data. Bluetooth models let you check everything from your phone without going below decks β ideal when you're at the helm.
Marine Installation Tips
Boats are a tough environment β salt air, vibration, and moisture accelerate corrosion fast. Keep these in mind when installing your lithium setup:
- Use marine-grade tinned copper cable. Standard automotive cable corrodes far faster in a salt environment.
- Fuse close to the battery positive terminal β within 300mm is the rule of thumb.
- Secure the battery properly. LiFePO4 cells don't like hard impacts. Use a proper battery box or hold-down bracket rated for marine use.
- Match your charger. Shore power chargers, alternators, and solar controllers must be compatible with lithium chemistry. Running an old AGM profile risks overcharging and damaging the BMS.
- Keep it accessible. You want to read the monitor and reach the isolator switch easily, especially in a seaway.
